Most tooth damage doesn't come from accidents - it comes from small, repeated habits that feel completely harmless. Here are the five we see most often at the clinic, why they hurt your teeth, and the painless fixes for each.
1. Sipping Sweet or Fizzy Drinks All Day
One cola with lunch is a single acid attack your saliva can recover from. The same cola sipped across two hours is a continuous acid bath that enamel never gets a break from. The fix: finish drinks in one sitting, use a straw, and rinse with water after.
2. Brushing Too Hard (or Right After Eating)
Scrubbing harder doesn't clean better - it wears away enamel and pushes gums back, causing sensitivity. And brushing immediately after acidic food scrubs softened enamel. Use a soft brush, gentle circles, and wait 30 minutes after meals.
3. Using Teeth as Tools
Opening packets, tearing tape, cracking nuts - every dentist has seen a healthy tooth chipped by a plastic wrapper. Teeth are engineered for food, nothing else. Keep scissors nearby; it's cheaper than a crown.
4. Grinding & Clenching (Often at Night)
Waking with a tight jaw, morning headaches, or flattened tooth edges are classic signs of night grinding. Left alone it cracks teeth and strains the jaw joint. A simple custom night guard protects everything while you sleep - ask us at your next visit.
5. Snacking Constantly Between Meals
Every snack restarts the 30–40 minute acid cycle in your mouth. Six small snacks means your teeth are under attack most of the day. Group your eating into defined meals, and make between-meal choices tooth-friendly: water, nuts, cheese, crunchy vegetables.
