How Long Do Braces Really Take? A Month-by-Month Guide

"How long will I need to wear these?" - it's the first question almost every patient asks at the consultation, and the honest answer is: it depends, but usually 12 to 24 months. What that range actually looks like month by month is what nobody explains - so here it is, stage by stage, based on what we see every day at The Smile's Centre.

Month 0: The Consultation & Records

Before any brackets go on, we study your case: photographs, X-rays and a clinical examination of how your teeth and jaws meet. This is where treatment time is really decided - mild crowding may need just a year, while significant bite correction can take two. You'll leave this visit knowing your estimated duration, the type of braces suited to you, and the full cost - no surprises later.

Months 1–2: Bonding Day & the Adjustment Week

Getting braces on doesn't hurt - the brackets are simply glued to your teeth and a thin wire is placed. The soreness arrives a day later and lasts about 3–5 days as your teeth "wake up" and start moving. Soft foods, a little orthodontic wax on any rubbing bracket, and it passes quickly.

Dr Vikasini's tip: the first week is the hardest week of the entire treatment. If you can handle week one, you can handle all of it - it genuinely gets easier from here.

Months 3–6: The Visible Change Phase

This is the fun part. The most crooked teeth move first and fastest, so friends start noticing the difference around month three or four. You'll visit us every 4–6 weeks for wire adjustments - quick 15–20 minute appointments with a day or two of mild pressure after each.

Months 6–18: Fine-Tuning the Bite

The teeth look straight - so why aren't the braces off yet? Because straight teeth that don't bite together correctly will drift back. This middle phase aligns your upper and lower jaws so chewing forces are balanced. It's slower and less visible, but it's the difference between a result that lasts a lifetime and one that relapses.

  • Elastics (rubber bands): if prescribed, wearing them exactly as instructed is the single biggest factor in finishing on time.
  • Missed appointments: every skipped adjustment adds 4–6 weeks to your treatment.
  • Broken brackets: each breakage pauses progress - avoid hard and sticky foods.

The Final Months: Detailing & the Reveal

The last two or three visits are pure artistry - tiny bends in the wire to perfect the position of each individual tooth. Then comes debonding day: brackets off, teeth polished, and that first look in the mirror. It takes less than an hour, and yes, it's completely painless.

After Braces: Retainers Matter

Teeth have memory - without a retainer, they slowly drift back toward their old positions. Plan to wear your retainer as advised (typically full-time at first, then nights only). It's the cheapest insurance for the smile you just invested one to two years in.

Can treatment go faster? Yes - good oral hygiene, unbroken brackets, disciplined elastic wear and never missing an adjustment can genuinely shave months off.
